Otter Surveys

Otter surveys are an essential part of building development projects that involve waterways. These surveys help to identify the presence of otters and their habitats, which are protected by law. By conducting these surveys, developers can ensure that their projects comply with environmental regulations and avoid any negative impact on the local ecosystem.

Why are otters surveyed?

The otter is a European Protected Species under the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017 (as amended), with additional protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended). It is protected from killing, disturbance, and damage or destruction of resting places. In addition, the species is classified as a Species of Principal Importance (SPI).

Because of this protected status, it is essential that surveys are carried out to detect their presence or absence, monitor otter populations, track their distribution, and inform conservation efforts. These surveys help ensure that appropriate measures are in place to maintain and support the species’ continued recovery and long-term protection.

When do I need to have an otter survey?

An otter survey is required where a site provides suitable habitat for otters, mainly river channels, streams, and associated waterbodies, and where these areas may be affected by development or restoration works. In these cases, it is necessary to establish the presence or likely absence of otters before works begin.

An otter survey involves searching the watercourse or waterbody, the banks, and surrounding vegetation for evidence of otter activity such as spraints, holts, slides, and footprints.

Surveys can be undertaken all year round, although less suitable periods such as winter and times of dense vegetation growth should be avoided wherever possible, as these conditions can reduce visibility and the likelihood of detecting signs.
